The Census Bureau has for the past ten years posted on a public website the social security numbers of people who have received financial ad.
The obvious mistake has brought concerns of identity theft. The bureau has since removed the information and apologized for their mistake. Unfortunately there are many copies of the website that exist on the internet which they now have to clean up. Sites like archive.org copy and store all the websites their web crawlers and spiders can get a hold of. Read the article on The Washington Post.
